How does Mews translate their Service?

I've come across questionable or misleading translations in Mews a few times, but recently a guest pointed out the following:

This is, of course - especially directed at the guests - extremely unprofessional and untrustworthy, so my question is: how exactly does the translation process work?

It's clear that this is a machine translation, but I'm wondering why it's so incredibly bad… it reminds me of the spam emails of the past. Furthermore, is there no native speaker checking the translated texts in Mews?

Hi all, thank you for sharing your feedback!

@jones.eth I’ve contacted our translation team and they did a thorough check; both strings present as follows on our end:
"Ich stimme Folgendem zu: AGB der Unterkunft"
"Ich möchte gelegentlich Marketing-E-Mails von {enterpriseName} erhalten."

As @Johannes Rott suggested, this is likely due to browser translations that overwrite our correct existing translations.

Please do continue to share any translation errors that you come across, this is really helpful for our translation team, in case anything falls through the tracks 🙏

@j.spiess Appreciate you sharing this, thanks! I will get this feedback to the team.

Hi Jones.eth,

we realized that issue as well and found maybe the causing problem.

it depends on which translation is used on the explorer for example firefox. if you use the autotranslation functionallity.

for example it translates the reservation report to “liebesbericht” quite funny but for sure unproffessional.

@Johannes Rott that sounds plausible. I remember we had an similar problem in the past.

But the guest was german speaking and the screenshot is german too. I don’t think that the guest portal was set to any other language.

true, that is some kind of weird. We do sometimes see issues on the portal as well. For example double rooms are translated not into german (as chosen languages) the appear in french

maybe there is a bug on translations?

Often times when translating you don’t really have context. Especially with single words like in buttons – in combination with an automated translation – that can lead to strange results. But especially with a service as big as Mews that should be checked in context.

i do agree on that. @Mews Community Team can you jump in here and check with the product team?

Hello!

I think the translation process is just broken or flawed to say the least … I think it’s acceptable to make the translation AI automatic for a start, but there should be an easy feedback/review process for users to flag bad / misleading translations.

Let me chime in with another example:

In the German version of the Guest Portal it says „Ihr Portemonnaie aufwerten“ when suggesting to add Wallet Keys, which is a totally silly translation! „Portemonnaie“ is not a word every German speaker will naturally associate with a wallet, let alone with a digital wallet. And „Ihr Portmonnaie aufwerten“ would translate to English like „increase the value of your wallet“ - that makes no sense… :-) So the correct translation to German should be „Zimmerschlüssel zu Apple Wallet oder Google Wallet hinzufügen“ (to maintain Apple speach police rules) or short „Zimmerschlüssel zu Wallet hinzufügen“ (but I’d prefer the former, for more clarity and consistency with Apple rules)..

Maybe 2026 could be 👉 The Year of Correct Translations 🎉

Kind regards,

JP.

@jessica.becker can you check on my other thread as well regarding translation issues on the guest portal for space categories? This would be really helpful.

@jessica.becker we had that problems with browser translations running over the guest portal in the past. It seems others had that too. When i remember right in all cases the person was speaking german und the page was german too … could it be a possibility that the page returns german content but on the technical side identifies as english page (<html lang="en">)? … Seems strange to me that the clients translator triggers?

@jessica.becker abd @jones.eth on our end it is german and the translation in guest portal are french.

Just space categories. no other issues seen by now.
