Rates including Breakfast and the city tax

Dear all,

We are currently experiencing an issue with our hotels in Austria regarding Booking.com reservations that include Bed & Breakfast.

We have noticed a slight difference in the total amount charged. The reason appears to be that Booking.com calculates the city tax based on the total reservation amount (room + breakfast), whereas Mews calculates the city tax only on the room rate, since breakfast is configured as a separate product.

As a result, there is a discrepancy between the total amount calculated by Booking.com and the amount charged in Mews.

Has anyone else experienced the same issue? If so, how did you resolve it?

Servus George!

Wir haben bei uns im Haus in Wien dasselbe Thema.

Wir berechnen die Ortstaxe anhand der Schlüsselzahl und der Logis.

Booking.com berechnet die Ortstaxe jedoch inklusive Frühstück und mit 5 %, wodurch es zu einer Differenz kommt.

Als Workaround haben wir folgende zwei Produkte angelegt:

  • Restbetrag BDC
  • Restbetrag OTX BDC

Unser Nachtdienst berechnet bei den Anreisen die Differenz und bucht diese anschließend anteilig auf Logis und Ortstaxe.

vielen Dank für deine hilfreiche Antwort.

Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, hast du zwei neue Produkte erstellt: eines für den Restbetrag der Ortstaxe und ein weiteres für den verbleibenden Restbetrag, beide aus BDC.

Ich möchte noch einen Punkt klären. Ist eure ursprüngliche Frühstücksgebühr als Produkt eingerichtet, das den Zimmerpreis aufschlüsselt, sobald er an MEWS übertragen wird?

Und was die beiden neuen Produkte betrifft: Welches davon verwendet ihr? Nutzt ihr nur eines davon oder berechnet und bucht ihr beide?

sorry für die späte Antwort.

Genau wir haben zwei Produkte erstellt und nutzen diese anteilig für die Differenz um die Ortstaxe richtig zu verrechnen und der Rest geht in die Logis.

Ja Frühstück ist als Produkt erstellt.

Hello,

This issue affects all properties that charge City Tax because the OTAs do not provide a breakdown of the breakfast component. As a result, the City Tax is calculated on the total amount instead of only on the accommodation portion.

Additionally, when accommodation and food are subject to different VAT rates, the VAT summary is also displayed incorrectly in the OTAs for the same reason.

I have checked several other properties and confirmed that they are experiencing the same issue.

As a workaround, I have configured the City Tax to be paid at the property, as Mews calculates the City Tax correctly. Given the current limitations, I believe this is the best approach.

​@Robin Gustavsson  Regarding the case mentioned above, as far as we can confirm, Booking.com is charging a different city tax percentage (5%) than the rate required by the authorities in Vienna (4.58...%). This is another reason, besides the known issue with the included breakfast, why this case is problematic.

For us, charging the city tax separately is simply not a practical solution. In 50–60% of reservations, guests would only need to pay the city tax on-site because breakfast is included and no other extras are consumed.

Fortunately, our other four properties are located in regions where the city tax is a fixed amount rather than a percentage, so this issue is limited to our Vienna property.

Are you saying that Booking.com is also charging the wrong percentage and not complying with local tax laws?

That seems like something they would want to correct immediately if they were made aware of it.

Out of curiosity, how have they justified it when this has been brought up?
