Early access to the new Mews Kiosk

We are sure you’ve seen the exciting announcement that a new Mews Kiosk is coming in early October. 

As valued members of the Community, we’d love to give exclusive early access to any customers that just can’t wait until the launch date to try the new Kiosk. 

 

What can I expect from the new Kiosk? 

 

There are several benefits and new capabilities with the Kiosk mentioned in our announcement. The new design, while significantly improved over the existing Kiosk, follows a familiar journey for check in and check out, minimising the need for teams to ‘re-learn’ the Kiosk.  

However, there are several new settings in the Kiosk configuration page that unlock some of the new capabilities: 

  • Images – Upload up to three images to better reflect your brand during Kiosk check in and check out. 

  • Check in grace period - Choose a time duration to allow guests a grace period within which they can check in through the Kiosk without being charged an early check in fee. 

  • Early check in fee – Select a product within your bookable service to use as an automatic charge for early check ins. Please note you need a Mews Terminal connected to your Kiosk to take payment for early check-in fees. 

  • Choose what guests need to find their reservation – Choose to let guests check in through Kiosk using only their last name when a unique reservation match can be found. 

  • Screen saver video URL – Provide a direct link to a MP4 video to use as your Kiosk screen saver after 10-minutes of inactivity. 

 

What do I need to do to get started? 

  1. Confirm any tablets running the Kiosk are using the latest version of the app (v3.19.0 or above) 

  1. Reply to this post with the property where you’d like to have the new Kiosk 

  1. I will confirm and aim to enable the new design for the property the following morning to minimise disruption during check in time 

  1. You will then be able to update any of the new settings to take advantage of the new capabilities

Looks amazing! Would you please unlock the new kiosk for Hotel Villa Monte? Check-in without the confirmation number is a game changer for us :-)

Great new features 😎

We are happy to test this new functionality for Styles Hotel Karlsruhe Messe.  We will check and confirm the latest updates from the Kiosk App.

For next Updates:

1. Is there also a option to avoid double postings of breakfast or services ? Often guest does select breakfast although it is already included in their rate. Mews does still offer this product and so they are charges twice and we have to refund the breakfast. Would be great to have a function to avoid this .

2. If you then enable guests to add a billing address at arrival would be great 👍

Amazing ! Would it be possible to see the new feature ? Do you have the SALTO KS connection. We have code locks and we do not give cards to guests.

Thank you for reaching out to try the new Kiosk!

I will plan to enable the new Kiosk design at Styles Hotel Karlsruhe Messe tomorrow morning. 

On your questions:

  1. The Kiosk won’t offer a guest a product that is already on their reservation. However, we know that if you have multiple types of breakfast products, we can’t prevent the other breakfast products being promoted. We are considering ways to better group products to prevent this, but this isn’t yet resolved in the new design.
  2. For the alternative billing address, we know this is a big challenge and is something we want to address. I’m afraid that we don’t currently have a timeline for when a solution will be available though.

Please watch out for more information as there will be more details shared in the run up to the release. In the meantime, we wanted to offer this early access opportunity for our Community ahead of the wider release communication.

Is there a specific new feature from the post that you’d like to know more about?

For Salto KS, are you using this with the existing Mews Kiosk or is the combination of Kiosk and Salto new for your property?

I have just enabled the new Kiosks at the properties requested. The devices should update within a few moments (if they’re using v3.19.0 and above) and you now also have access to all the new settings.

If we choose only “Last Name” to find reservation what is in case we have multiple guests with the same last name?

Possible to select other combinations like Name + First Name?

If there are two guests with the same last name and a reservation for that day, they will also be asked to provide their confirmation number as in today’s experience.

Also, if the reservation is already checked in then the confirmation number is always required at the Kiosk for security reasons.

Currently, we only have the option to use last name to find a reservation with the confirmation number as the back up. We have no immediate plans to add other alternatives, but I appreciate there could be multiple options to identify the right reservation with data other than the confirmation number. I’d be keen to hear your feedback on how the last name only option works for your property?

Thank you for sharing this feedback, I’m sharing my response here as well.

We are working to add the ID scan back to the registration card in Staff mode. However, in Guest mode, we’re working to move this earlier in the flow to the find reservation step. This is aimed at reducing the time to check in for a guest-led check in.

Hi there! We rely heavily on the current kiosk and are generally very happy with it. It’s a key component in our mission to deliver a 100% digital guest journey.

We’re interested in testing out the new Kiosk at our property, ONDA Playa Grande.

A few questions/concerns:

We operate in a geography where the Mews terminal isn’t available/possible. All on-premise payment processing in Costa Rica must be done via bank issued payment terminals. As a result, we force all guests to provide CC information at booking and use Mews/Stripe to process payments online (i.e., every guest who stays with us has a credit card on file in Mews).

  • If a guest adds an add-on product at check-in (e.g., early check in fee), is it possible for them to add it to their bill and charge the card on file before checking in? Or would this require the Mews terminal?
  • Not having the terminal presents issues at check-out. More explicitly, we can’t use the Mews terminal to check out anyone with an open bill, as it currently requires payment via the terminal to balance the bill. It is not possible to run the card on file to balance the bill using the check-out function on the kiosk.
  • It is, however, possible for the guest to run their credit card on file if they check-out using the link emailed to them on the morning of check out.
  • It would be incredibly beneficial for us to offer guests the ability to charge the card on file (as opposed to using the Mews terminal) to balance bills during the kiosk check-out process.

Hi @Dominik, thank you for your question.

I’m afraid there isn’t a capability in the new Kiosk to show the guest if they’ve been upgraded before arrival.

However, this is a really nice idea and something that we can consider for future development.

Thanks, James. Is it on the roadmap at all to charge a card on file for kiosk check-out?

Our guests are very confused that they can charge the card on file if they use the self check-out function on their phone, but not on the Kiosk. Not having the ability to use the Mews terminal is really hindering us here.

@Grafpaper, I’m afraid this is not currently on the roadmap for Kiosk, but we are looking at how we can better support Markets without terminals in future.

Hi @Sam, we’re still working to add the ID scan capability to the app and this will follow after the initial release.

The app will be released as a new v4.0. If you want to wait until ID scanning is added (we expect a few weeks more) then you could choose to not update the app from the App/Play store until this work is complete. 

This does rely on those devices being set up from the Play Store rather than the previous ‘provisioning’ method.
