For external payments, the “Expiration date” is a non-mandatory field.
The star seems to indicate that it is. Please remove the star.

Add external payment -> External card payment -> New Payment card -> "Expiration Date" | please remove as mandatory field

As far as I can tell, they removed the * at Mews so this is no mandatory field anymore 😆
